The name Berghaus has long been considered as the epitome of unparalleled outdoor and adventure clothing. Because at the time all the uber-cool sportswear/clothing came from Germany, this thoroughly British Company translated the original company name of Mountain Centre into German as Berghaus, giving it instant credibility. From its humble beginnings in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1966, the company has become a byword for all that is superlative in outdoor clothing and footwear, and is worn by both the fashion conscious and famous adventurers the world over. Berghaus currently has three new jackets this season. The versatile Berghaus Paclite Trek, which is a lightweight mountain walking jacket. With an active cut, it's made out of exclusive GORE-TEX/PACLITE Bassano fabric with GORE-TEX/PACLITE Cassis panels for extra durability. It's waterproof, windproof, breathable and robust. It's also got huge pockets that you can fill with Kendall mintcake, and a full mountain hood with volume adjuster and wired peak, which is useful if you get caught in an unexpected squall. The Berghaus Balteoro is a great new 'soft shall' jacket. Made out of Gore WINDSTOPPER Soft Shell, The baltoro is designed for all outdoor use, except the heaviest rain and most inclement conditions. It has all benefits and warmth of the double layers but it’s not bulky or restrictive like some other outdoor jackets. If you need to keep warm when the temperature hovers around freezing, but don't want to end up looking like The Michelin Man, then the Berghaus Blast combines premium 650 fill power goose down with a windproof Airfoil outer fabric and some great functional features. Additionally, Berghaus and Clerk & Teller whose collaboration is in its third season will also be producing tweed and cotton versions of its classic Craic jacket, which is a comfortable and versatile jacket with a water-resistant Gore Tex breathable stretch membrane.

Lets face the bona fide facts: Though we may want to ignore it, aging is inevitable - and that goes for the planet on which we live, too. In light of this, the fashion industry is beginning to become more socially aware of their products and fabrication processes. But does that make for good fashion? The Clerk & Teller brand is very good: "We try to be as socially aware as we can and trust that people accept our small contributions to the cause. We believe people are generally becoming more aware but we appreciate that everybody is an individual and capable of forming their own opinions." Perceptive words of wisdom from Bob Karbon - one half of this English-bred brand. Clerk & Teller is the brainchild of Karbon and Copi Weave, a former bank clerk and a former teller, respectively, who have chosen to take a comical approach to their brand while employing a rather serious approach to utilizing eco-friendly outlets. So how exactly did these finance-employed friends somehow come to make clothes? According to Karbon, "We have lived and breathed fashion for over 25 years and 20 years, respectively. We started out working weekends in stores and collecting garments and ideas throughout our lives. This is our passion." With a whimsical marketing concept that is based around a "bank clerk" and a "bank teller," (just check out their "banking" themed website) this designing duo uses their brand as an outlet to have some fun with the world of banking and finance. "We all have to interact with the world of banking and finance, whether we want to or not," says Karbon. "We felt everyone around the world could understand the concept. Plus, the opportunity to have some fun with the establishment was too good opportunity to miss."

Summer rain is one of life's more annoying certainties. If you're not wearing a mac, you'll get wet. And if you are wearing a mac, you'll sweat. Either way, you're not staying dry. These days we do have Gore-tex jackets that are both waterproof and breathable - but they're not really wearable with a suit. Which is where Clerk & Teller's clever collaboration with technical wizards Berghaus comes in. The result is the Craic Lite jacket: high-tech spec meets Prince of Wales check. This jacket is well worth investing in. So, as they say in The City: Buy, buy, buy!

"I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK..." The emasculated logger, once a fount of British comedy, ceases to be a laughing matter now that the look is being reconstructed in all it's retrosexual, axe-wielding glory. We could have presented you one of the numerous designer plaid shirts as seen on the catwalks of DSquared, Prada and in Alexander McQueen's much-heralded new McQ line. But instead we've unearthed this more cerebral (and, crucially, more affordable) version from cult menswear label Clerk & Teller. In only its second season, C&T has produced original lumber shirts with (categorically un-lumber) Italian brushed cotton and satin trim. Now where did we put that axe?

Quality Gear

New British menswear label Clerk & Teller has a simple philosophy - to produce everyday, wearable, classic silhouettes of the highest quality. Inspiration for the label comes from a range of diverse influences including technical outdoor wear, army surplus gear, early Massimo Osti designs such as Left Hand, and traditional English tailoring and fabrics.

Highlights of their first autumn/winter collection include organic cotton plaid shirts with slash pockets and satin finish, reversible fine gauge knitwear, plaid bomber jackets with leather trim and pyjama-collared dress shirts. The attention to detailing even extends to the packaging with garments boxed and packaged in recycled copies of the Financial Times. Be sure to keep and eye out for a special winter collaboration with Berghaus, a tweed version of the outdoor specialist's classic parka that retains full technical specifications while offering a hint of the English country gent.
